Pulmonary embolism (PE)

I.  Definition
    A.  A blockage of the pulmonary artery or one of its branches
        1. Thromboembolism occurs when a deep vein thrombus is dislodged from its site of formation and travels to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs
        2. . This process is termed thromboembolism

II.  Symptoms
    A.  Difficullty breathing
    B.  Chest pain on inspiration
    C. Palpitations.
    D . H
ypoxia
    E.  Tachypnea
    F. Tachycardia
    G. Can lead to instability and death.

III. Diagnosis
    A. Gold standard for diagnosis is visualization a clot on CT pulmonary angiography.

IV. Treatment.
    A.  Anticoagulant 
        1. Heparin 
        2.  Warfarin 
    B.  May require thrombolysis
        1.  Tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) 
    C.  Thrombectomy.
